REVIEW: American Gods, Episode 102
Like the pilot, “The Secret of Spoon” starts with a little sideline scene, but that still fits completely to the story. A few centuries ago, in a boat full of slaves, a black man prays to his God for help, and in fact a God appears, but probably not the one he was praying for. This way we meet Mr. Nancy, short for Anansi, African trickster God. Like any other God (as we saw in the first moments of the last episode), what Nancy wants is death, sacrifices in his name to keep his belly full. What I like about tricksters in shows and movies (at least in the good ones) is that they usually trick people by telling them the truth, and that is exactly what he does. He tells those soon-to-be slaves all about their not-so-bright future once they get to America. And that makes them burn the ship, killing all those aboard. Pleased, Nancy manages to get back to shore, in a spider form, ready to continue with his tricks.
But Nancy isn’t the only God we meet in this episode. When Shadow goes shopping for Wednesday, he crosses paths with Media who is Mass Media and Entertainment personified. This time she appears as Lucy Ricardo from I Love Lucy. Even after unplugging all the TV’s in the store, Media is still there and she is focused on hiring Shadow, welcoming him to the “winners team” saying that Wednesday is “old news”. I love when she says that the screen is the altar and what people sacrifice to her is time and attention. There are definitely a lot of differences between old and new Gods, but it is really interesting to think about it and realize that maybe sacrificing attention may be better than sacrificing lives. When you sacrifice a life, it may be a powerful sacrifice, but that’s it. But when you sacrifice attention, you do it today, tomorrow and you also did it yesterday. This may prove that the New Gods may have an upper hand. Or not.

It was also nice seeing how old-fashioned Wednesday is, which could not be in any other way. It was hilarious when he threw the phone off the car window and when he said they would not be using highways, ever. In this episode we also have one of the first clues to Wednesday’s real identity. When Czernobog gets home, he calls him “Wotan”. I am not going to talk about it here (at least not now) because I don’t want to spoil those people that want to find out who he is in the context of the show, but if you do want to find out about it, just google “Wotan”, and you will find it easily.
We are also introduced in this episode to the mysterious Zorya sisters (who come from Slavic mythology). If you, like me, had never heard of them don’t worry because who they are and what they do is explain in the next episode (pretty close to the beginning if I am not mistaken). Apart from these, we also meet Czernobog, who, as a cow killer, also doesn’t like modern tools very much (the details in the explanation he gives are beyond weird and scary, even for someone whose name can be translated as “Black God”).
Czernobog challenges Shadow to a game of checkers and they eventually make a wager that is only worthy of the “Black God” himself: if Shadow wins, Czernobog will go with Wednesday and help him on his quest, but if Shadow loses, he gets to smash his head and brain with a hammer. I think this is the moment Shadow kind of starts to believe the things around him. After seeing Media he was a bit reluctant about the whole thing, but then he sees Czernobog’s hammer bleeding and he just gives up on trying to find a reasonable explanation for everything, because “The world is either crazy or you are”, like Wednesday said.
I think it is also nice to reflect about the title of this episode, because unlike the premiere’s title, this one is not as much straightforward. While Czernobog and Shadow are playing checkers, the “Black God” starts singing a song and after a little digging I found the lyrics:
My love made the sweetest coffee with no sugar at all
She only stirred with her spoon and it was done
Now my drink is bitter, the secret of spoon forgotten
When my voice breaks on this song, remember all love gone
And drink the bitter coffee
And drink the bitter coffee.
We see earlier that the Zorya sisters can read the future through what stays in the cup after one drinks his coffee, and that is what she does with Shadow. But after saying she will do it, Wednesday gets a spoon and mixes his coffee, maybe making it impossible for Zorya Vechernyaya to read his future, and therefore, that secret is forever lost to the spoon.
Overall, this episode was great. It was nice being introduced to new characters, especially knowing that each one has a meaning of its own. This way, I will give it a 8.3/10 (I don’t want to overrate it, because it is only going to get better and better).
Stay tuned for my next review of episode 103 entitled “Head Full of Snow”.

SDCC: ‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 7 Trailer Reveals Police Officer Hook and New Characters
This year’s San Diego Comic-Con is giving us every trailer we’ve been waiting for, including Once Upon a Time.
A whole bunch of new information also came out about the show. Executive producer Eddy Kitsis confirmed that nothing from the previous six season will be erased.
According to TV Line, executive producers of the show revealed some new info about the plot, saying we will see the same versions of Hook, Rumple and the Queen, “Henry wants to visit other storybooks with different stories and characters. He falls in love with Cinderella, much like the romance his grandparents had. He gets into some trouble and calls out for help from his family.”
Fans at Comic-Con were shown the first two scenes of the upcoming season, and TV Line also gave us some info on that.
Young Henry (played by Gilmore) tells Regina he needs to leave Storybrooke in order to find out what his own story is and where he belongs (after finding hundreds of other books in the sorcerer’s mansion. “How long will you be gone?” Regina asks, to which Henry replies, “As long as it takes.” He then hops on a motorcycle — which August taught him how to ride — before riding off through a portal to a new realm.
We then see West’s grown-up Henry riding his motorcycle in another realm, “years later,” at which point he accidentally crashes into Cinderella’s carriage.
Kitsis also confirmed that they’re planning on doing a “prominent LGBTQ storyline” this year.
The recently launched trailer gives us our first looks at our new characters: Dania Ramirez’s Cinderella, Rose Reynolds’ Alice, Adelaide Kane’s Drizella, Mekia Cox’s Tiana and Gabriella Anwar’s Lady Tremaine aka Cinderella’s stepmother.
The trailer also features our favorite Captain Hook as a policeman and reveals a whole lot more information about the plot.

REVIEW: Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, Episode 102
After an episode of questions (a pilot episode tends to do that) it is nice having an episode of answers. In “Trust Me” we find out what Jafar and the Red Queen are up to: they want to gather 3 genies in order to change the laws of magic. It also doesn’t take long to know what these laws are because Cyrus explains them to Alice in a flashback. Cyrus says he can’t kill people (this is only a genie rule and not a law of magic), can’t bring back the dead, can’t change the past (this one is not so strict anymore as you might remember from season 3B of “Once Upon A Time”) and can’t make people fall in love. These are the 3 rules these villains want to be free of, each for their own personal reasons, I’m sure, and those reasons won’t probably take long to be revealed to us.
What is interesting in a villain team up is that they are all constantly trying to be the leader and that is why they usually fail. In the beginning of the episode it is clear that Jafar is the most powerful one and that the Red Queen is just a pawn in his game. He is simply using her to find Cyrus’ genie bottle, making her promises along the way he doesn’t intend to keep. After all, as the Red Queen says, “promises were made to be broken”. But Jafar underestimated the Queen of Wonderland and it doesn’t take long for her to make a stand. She sends Jafar on a wild goose chase, while she and the Rabbit (who she has an upper hand on) go to where the bottle is actually buried, making herself now much more than a pawn in the chess game that is starting to take place.
But Jafar is not the only one making planes, because Alice also makes some of her own. She wants to make 3 harmless wishes (since magic, wishes included, always comes with a price) and then Cyrus will be back to his bottle, which she intends to have by then. But most planes are made to be tossed to the trash and this one is no different. First Alice and Will find a very big lake and, needing help to get through it (since Will can’t swim), they call a fairy, Silvermist. But she isn’t very willing to help (given her past with Will, which she is not as “move on” from as she said) and eventually throws them both into the lake. As luck would have it, they landed close to a little island (convenient, right?) where they rested while trying to come up with something that would allow them to continue their journey. But turned out that they hadn’t used all the luck they had for that day, and the island they were in wasn’t really an island and more of a gigantic turtle. Alice not being one of subtlety, demands the turtle to take them to their destination.
But turned out Alice simply wanted to see who they were up against, because the place they go to wasn’t where the bottle was buried. After finding Jafar digging, Alice and Will go to the place the bottle was actually buried but only find a hole in the ground. The bottle had been taken already. And that is when a message from Cyrus arrives. Cyrus asks Alice to leave Wonderland while she still can’t, but he didn’t have to bother because everyone knew (maybe even Cyrus) that she would never do that. Instead Alice sends him another message: “I’m coming for you”.
This episode also introduced two mysterious character: Anastasia (who is “a tale of heartbreak” for Will) and another prisoner that is trapped in the same dungeon as Cyrus. Keep them in mind because they will be important as the story develops.
I feel like in this episode, in contrary to the previous one, the flashbacks were a little pointless and didn’t add much to the story (not only this episode’s story, but the entire season’s). The only thing that could be called “relevant” we learned in the flashbacks were what the laws of magic are, but that could be easily explained in the present. This being said, I’m glad there weren’t a lot of flashback scenes. They are important and very explanatory in some episodes, but not in this one.
But it was still a good episode and I will give a 7.5/10.
Also keep in mind that Alice isn’t the only one “coming for you”. I will too, so don’t forget to check my upcoming review of episode 103, “Forget Me Not”.
