REVIEW: The Gifted, Episode 105
The Gifted is back in this Halloween week with its fifth episode of this first season entitled “boXed in”, and in it we finally saw the Strucker reunion we were waiting for (or at least I was).
In a glimpse to Jace’s earlier life, we saw the reason why he hates mutants so much: his daughter was killed in the result of a mutant protest gone wrong. In a show, it is usually easy to make the audience love the good guys and make us feel for them, but it isn’t always easy to make us feel bad for the bad guys as well, and that was a little bit of this episode’s focus. I don’t think I have to say that it was horrible what happened to his child, but of course that it doesn’t make sense to blame all mutants. If people consider them a race, they should know that not everyone is good and not everyone is bad. That is like saying because a white guy killed many innocent people (in a bombing for example) we should hate and hunt down all white people.
In present day, Jace made good in his promise from the previous episode and started doing everything he could to hunt down everyone who helped Reed and Lorna escape. This caused the team to split up, making Marcos and Lorna go distract the sentinel services. Now that they are together, we could see their relationship is really sweet, especially when they touch each other and create an aurora borealis. They went a little bit over the line, and kidnapped Jace, in an attempt to find out what they did to Pulse. As usual, things got a little out of hand when Dreamer messed with his head, making a few things confusing, like the fact his daughter died years back.
Meanwhile, in the Mutant Headquarters, and as I said before, the Strucker family was reunited at last. It took some time, but they are all together now. I really liked the scenes they all shared together, like the best horrible dinner. But of course not everything can be perfect for a long time, and we also saw most of this family work together to save Harry (the mutant who got shot on episode 4). They combined each of their ability and were able to impress the mutants, hopefully making them realize they are there to help, and not to sell them all out.
At the same time, in order to try to give the Sentinel services another job to do, trying to take their eyes of the Jace kidnappers, Reed risked his freedom by putting himself on the streets and making sure he was noticed. When I found out his ride was that guy who was very mad at him (he is right to be actually), I thought he was just going to abandon Reed and let him get arrested again. Turns out he was just testing his loyalty, and this is of course, understandable, after all, his job was to put mutants behind bars for the rest of their lives.
After seeing Dreamer in action, Clarice realized that her memories had also been changed, and the moment she remembered between her and John wasn’t real. There really seems like more trouble is coming, and this time it can be between the mutants. So much for a united front.
Overall, this was another good episode, with intense moments, a few twists, and even scenes watched from the bad guy’s perspective. This show is really looking good, and I hope it continues this way. I am giving this episode an 8.3/10.
Episode 6 is entitled “got your siX”, and in it, the people in the Mutant Underground will continue to investigate and try to find out what happened to Pulse, and if that can be repeated with other mutants.
Jace Throws his Strongest Forces into Finding the Mutant Underground in Newest The Gifted Promo
“The X-Men said a war is coming.”
The latest episode of The Gifted set the bar high when it comes to action in the show, and it gave us a happy ending after Lorna (Emma Dumont) and Reed (Stephen Moyer) managed to escape (after a lot of planning and a lot of things going wrong).
However, it looks like the Mutant Underground won’t have a lot of time to celebrate the reunions.
The stakes are getting higher in the latest promo for episode 1.05 of The Gifted, titled “boXed in,” as Jace sends the Sentinels Services to find the Mutant Underground headquarters.
The episode will also feature Blink (Jamie Chung) finally confronting Dreamer (Elena Satine).

REVIEW: The Gifted , Episode 104
After waiting another week, The Gifted is back with its forth episode of this first and only season, which is entitled “eXit strategy”. In it, we finally got to see some very needed and awaited reunions between characters.
As it is usual by now, the episode started with a little flashback into John’s earlier life. By then, he was already fighting the Sentinel Services, but in that moment, he suffered a great lost: his friend, who is known as Pulse. John thought he died, but later in the episode we discovered he hadn’t. Instead, he started working for the Sentinel services. I really hope we see Pulse again, because I think it would be really interesting to see how he changed sides, what kind of brainwash made him betray his own kind. It would really be a waste to ignore all this, so I hope they won’t.
In present day, in the Mutant Underground, everyone realized they can’t continue waiting around, because they know Reed and Lorna will be transferred soon. Since attacking the prison would be a horrible idea, they decided to rescue their friends/family while they were on the move, which of course seemed like a much better plan.
It was really great seeing Andy and Lauren combine their powers to help. Andy’s power are still a little bit all over the place, and it felt right that Laurel gave him some control over them. This also got me wondering if this is what Dr. Roderick Campbell meant in the last episode. Maybe combined, the Strucker teens are more powerful than anyone could imagine. If this is the case, that would be a great reason for this doctor to be concerned about them, as he seemed to be in the last episode when he called Jace Turner.
In the Mutant Underground, most of the episode showed everyone preparing for the coming battle, including Clarice, who has been doubting some things (I guess Dreamer’s work on her didn’t go as expected), but Marcos headed somewhere else, to gather some intel: the route the Sentinel Services would take to transfer the prisoners. Of course information doesn’t come cheap, and this time was no different. Marcos had a past with that family, a bad one, so for the info, he had to reverse to his old self, and start to torture people. I was really surprised Marcos has such a dark past, because he seems like a nice guy who would never do that kind of thing. Maybe his love for Lorna was what changed him, that being one more reason to have her back which made him do the torturing thing. I hope he won’t fall back into his old ways.
Meanwhile, at the prison, Jace put Lorna and Reed in two cells close to each other, and it was then that we started to realize how many bad things prosecutors do to mutants: they rip them from their families, parents from children, sometimes practically leaving them orphans; children from their parents, putting them in a place where they will probably be bullied for most of their life. And of course, Reed only changed his perspective when it was his own family who was going to be ripped away, while with the others he said simply “Well, that’s the law”. The things about this is that it works just fine, until the law backfires and starts to hit its creators, making them realize it wasn’t a very good one after all. But by the time that happens, it’s too late already.
I can’t speak for everyone in this matter, but for me, the last 10 minutes totally made the episode. It had everything a good fight should have: intense moments, team work, sacrifice, blood, unexpected turns and even some friend (or ex-friend) reunions. In the end, it all was as it should be: Marcos was finally reunited with Lorna and his unborn child, and the Strucker family was reunited too.
Overall, this really was a great episode. As I said before, it was the final few minutes which made it great, but of course, the rest was good too. This was, in my opinion, the best episode so far, so I am giving it an 8,5/10.
The fifth episode of the season is entitled “boXed in”, and in it we will see Jace angrier than we ever did before, because he will totally not settle with Reed and Lorna’s escape, so he wil not only want to get them, but also everyone who helped them.
REVIEW: The Gifted, Episode 103
The Gifted continues its season with this third episode, entitled “eXodus” and in it, Kate continued to believe humans can still be trusted, or at least she believed her brother could.
Like the previous episode, this one started with a little flashback scene in which we saw the beginning of Lorna and Marcos’ relationship. I am actually liking these “sideline” scenes, because it somehow helps build the storyline, and make a little bit more sense out of the story. Not to mention that it was beautiful seeing the aurora borealis around the two when they touched each other. I guess we could totally see how they fell in love.
In the major storyline, and like I predicted last week, Reed decided to make the deal he was offered, therefore, finding out where the Mutant Underground was, and help the Sentinel Services get in. Of course, he was a desperate man without any other option to save his family, so I will say it is understandable what he did. Or actually, what he almost did, since he didn’t take it through and I am glad he didn’t. After he found someone who was willing to take him there, Reed crossed paths with a woman and her little daughter, who had just lost their husband/father because of the sentinel services. The Mutant Underground was going to be, for them, a second chance, a place where they would be safe from all the craziness, and when Reed discovered that, he knew he couldn’t ruin that. Sure, he wanted his family back together, but he didn’t want to destroy another in the process. I am sure things will definitely not go well from now on (not that they were going well, but they will be even worse), but I hope he will make it through, at least until someone goes to his rescue.
Because she still had a little faith in humanity, and ignoring everyone who told her that that was a stupid idea, Kate decided to go ask her brother for help, since he knows people. Andy and Lauren went with her, and Kate found out her brother wasn’t as willing to help as she first thought. It was a bit heartbreaking seeing that Kate cared so much for Danny, but he still didn’t want to risk his reputation and career for his sister. Sure, he didn’t tell anyone where they were, but all he was willing to do was offer them a place to sleep and some money. Of course that it is better than nothing, but it was definitely not what they needed.
Meanwhile, Andy started being sick of people never accepting mutants just because of the X gene, and he is on a “I don’t care about anyone” mood. It really must suck being in his shoes. I don’t think he had a lot of friends in school, since he didn’t seem like the most popular guy ever, but I am sure he had some, and probably most of them (if not all) turned their backs on him, just because he is a mutant. I do like his attitude now. Seems a little bit too rebellious sometimes, but it wouldn’t be to expect anything different.
When trouble doesn’t find the mutants, it appears that mutants go find trouble, and when they did, in order to try to save everyone, Dreamer decided to implement some memories into Clarice, giving her the motivational strength to open a portal and save the team, especially John. This was definitely not the smartest choice she could have made, but it was kind of a necessary one, even though she totally created a love triangle now. I am sure this is totally not going to turn out well for anyone.
Lastly, in a small but relevant scene, Jace Turner, closer to the end of the episode, got a call from Dr. Roderick Campbell, who apparently wanted to say that the Strucker kids’ abilities have something special compared to everyone else. Jace totally ignored the doctor, but maybe he shouldn’t have, because I can see a lot of great consequences to this.
Overall this was another great episode. Compared to last week’s, this one felt a little bit slower, since in the second we had a deadline, and everyone was working against the clock. This wasn’t as intense (expect in some scenes), but I still give it a 7.7/10.
Next episode will, as usual, air next Monday and it will have as a tittle “eXit strategy”, and in it a plan will finally be arranged to break into the Sentinel Services , so don’t miss it.
REVIEW: The Gifted, Episode 102
After airing its pilot episode, The Gifted is back with its second episode entitled “rX” and in it we saw a race against time to stop Clarice from destroying the Mutant Underground.
The episode started with what I thought was a great scene in which we saw the Strucker family play bowling, when a girl with powers started being mocked, while everyone did nothing but watch. This, in my opinion, showed that most of the people there didn’t do anything because they shared the same opinion. The girl ended up getting upset and using her powers, and only then Reed interfered and told the girl and her father to get out, because the police was going to be after her. Sure this kind of showed Reed cares a bit about mutants, but not enough to publicly defend them, only to whisper in their ears to run away, and then turn his back, not really caring if they were going to take his advice.
In present day, with almost everyone back in the mutant underground, Clarice started going into shock and using her teleportation powers, always opening portals to the same road. Even though Lauren was able to close them, it did take some time. This made the police start to weapon up for when it happened again, and when it did, we saw another little showdown between mutants and the police. The situation grew worse, and portals started opening everywhere, making everyone evacuate the Underground.
Meanwhile, Marcos and Kate, who knows a little bit about medicine, went to a mutant hospital to try to steal supplies and save Clarice, since they can’t take her to a hospital. To get there, Kate opened Marcos’ wound from last episode, making him bleed light (which is always going to be weird). Because of the stupid made up excuse about how Marcos got his wound, and because Kate had some wounds of her own, the doctor thought she was suffering from domestic violence. I wonder if he would still think this if Marcos wasn’t a mutant. Maybe. Maybe not. I actually like to think so, since I think doctors are also trained for this. He even called the police, which, of course, turned out to be a problem, but a minor one. They got there just in time to save Clarice and the whole Underground. This last part didn’t really feel very realistic. I can buy the whole mutant thing, but a person who is dying and collapsing doesn’t just wake up one second after taking a shot (at least I don’t think so, but I am no doctor, so I am sorry, and glad, if this is a reality).
At the same time, Lorna started to adjust to her new life in prison, where she tried to make a mutant friend, only to learn that in there it is every woman for herself. Expect of course, the prison queen, who is never alone. Glad Lorna kicked her ass in the end, but, of course, not without getting kicked too, and on the belly which is even worse since she is pregnant. ecause she is a mutant, they didn’t even take her to the infirmary, but immediately to the “hole”.
Finally, in the aftermath of the last week’s episode, Reed was caught, imprisoned and questioned. Jace, the guy from the Sentinel Services, really did seem very desperate to get Reed to cooperate, so desperate that he played all his cards in a matter of hours. Because Reed was many times in the other side of the table, he knew exactly what was on Jace’s mind, so in the end they pretty much made a deal under his terms, expect for one thing: Jace wants the Mutant Underground. We didn’t hear Reed’s answer, but I think he will give Jace what he wants, and I really don’t blame him, since this is his family we are taking about. I think most people would do that.
I definitely continue to say this show really screams racism and homophobia, because what we see here is very similar to what used to happen with black people years ago (and even today unfortunately). People will always look at people who are different from them as inferior (fortunately not everyone, but a majority), but what they don’t know is that it is totally better to be different and mocked than to be kicking and like them. There is no such thing as superior people, only different, and if some can’t live with that, maybe they should get a time machine and go to a time where people agree (which is definitely many centuries ago). Sorry if I went a little bit off topic, but I really wanted to say that.
Overall, this was a good episode, but I feel like the pilot was better, since it had more action. To be honest, this kind of felt like a stall episode, but of course that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good, because, as I said, it was. I am giving it a 7.8/10.
The third episode is entitled “eXodus”, and I hope we start seeing some efforts for the Strucker family to be reunited, because it already seems that together is where they all belong.
REVIEW: The Gifted, Episode 101
One of the most awaited series premieres of this fall is probably The Gifted. Well, the wait is finally over, because last night this new show kicked off with its pilot entitled “eXposed”.
Because this is a show which has history behind it, and also doesn’t at the same time, I think it will gain a big audience real quick. By that I mean that a lot of people know about the X-men, and it has a big fandom, so that will draw attention. But it also doesn’t at the same time, because people don’t really need to have watched those movies to understand the show, and this is of course a plus, because it draws both kinds of people.
Moving on to the story now, this is a little bit classic X-men: 2 teenagers who find out they have the gene, and they drag their family on an escape from people who want them locked away. The only difference is that they don’t have Professor X to protect them. But, of course, that with the X-men gone, there are new mutant protectors: The Mutant Underground Headquarters. This escape requires two very different sides to work together, and that is always nice to watch: a mutant leader and a guy who hunts mutants. Of course, they didn’t trust each other (and they probably won’t for a while), and that is what is greater about it.
Another great thing about it, was the scene in the high school dance. It was really a very intense scene, full of suspense and emotions. I think it makes sense the gifts first reveal in an intense moment of people’s lives, since that is usually when we do things we didn’t know we could (of course that in the daily life it isn’t such unlikely things). It was even greater they added, before all this, that scene in which Andy and Lauren were talking about mutants, and how Andy was a bit racist.
In this pilot, we were able to see some mutants already, and I have to say that I always love seeing people with different abilities work together. It is so amazing how some people/powers complement each other when fighting the bad guys. I think this really is something I will never get tired of watching.
This is still the pilfirst episode, but I can already see a great story unfold. There are really many great possibilities for future episodes/seasons, and, unlike some shows, I think this show will be able to tell a long story, without getting cut off. The story is great, the cast is great, the special effects too. There is really no reason for cancelation here (adding what I already mentioned about the X-men connection).
Also, I think this show can even be something we can connect to our daily life, if we see the mutants as a metaphor to other outcast people in the community, like black people or LGBT members. As long as there is an “us” and a “them”, there will always be trouble and war (maybe not like a world war, but nevertheless a fight between the two sides). And this is exactly what we see in this show: people who see things in sides and that are not able to give in, always seeing themselves as superior and the others as a threat. The thing is that, of course, things always change when it is someone you know, like what happened with Reed. People can say they hate mutants all they want, but this is all up until a certain point. “Things change when it comes to your kid”, as Jace said, and this is really true for everything.
Overall, as I have been saying, this was a great pilot, full of action, suspense, thrill… everything a pilot needs to get people’s attention. The story was set in a good way, and we can hope all this will continue. I am giving this episode an 8.3/10 (I don’t want to raise the bar too high, since this is just the beginning).
Next episode is going to air next Monday, October 9th,and it is entitled “rX”, so don’t miss it.
