REVIEW: The Gifted , Episode 104
After waiting another week, The Gifted is back with its forth episode of this first and only season, which is entitled “eXit strategy”. In it, we finally got to see some very needed and awaited reunions between characters.
As it is usual by now, the episode started with a little flashback into John’s earlier life. By then, he was already fighting the Sentinel Services, but in that moment, he suffered a great lost: his friend, who is known as Pulse. John thought he died, but later in the episode we discovered he hadn’t. Instead, he started working for the Sentinel services. I really hope we see Pulse again, because I think it would be really interesting to see how he changed sides, what kind of brainwash made him betray his own kind. It would really be a waste to ignore all this, so I hope they won’t.
In present day, in the Mutant Underground, everyone realized they can’t continue waiting around, because they know Reed and Lorna will be transferred soon. Since attacking the prison would be a horrible idea, they decided to rescue their friends/family while they were on the move, which of course seemed like a much better plan.
It was really great seeing Andy and Lauren combine their powers to help. Andy’s power are still a little bit all over the place, and it felt right that Laurel gave him some control over them. This also got me wondering if this is what Dr. Roderick Campbell meant in the last episode. Maybe combined, the Strucker teens are more powerful than anyone could imagine. If this is the case, that would be a great reason for this doctor to be concerned about them, as he seemed to be in the last episode when he called Jace Turner.
In the Mutant Underground, most of the episode showed everyone preparing for the coming battle, including Clarice, who has been doubting some things (I guess Dreamer’s work on her didn’t go as expected), but Marcos headed somewhere else, to gather some intel: the route the Sentinel Services would take to transfer the prisoners. Of course information doesn’t come cheap, and this time was no different. Marcos had a past with that family, a bad one, so for the info, he had to reverse to his old self, and start to torture people. I was really surprised Marcos has such a dark past, because he seems like a nice guy who would never do that kind of thing. Maybe his love for Lorna was what changed him, that being one more reason to have her back which made him do the torturing thing. I hope he won’t fall back into his old ways.
Meanwhile, at the prison, Jace put Lorna and Reed in two cells close to each other, and it was then that we started to realize how many bad things prosecutors do to mutants: they rip them from their families, parents from children, sometimes practically leaving them orphans; children from their parents, putting them in a place where they will probably be bullied for most of their life. And of course, Reed only changed his perspective when it was his own family who was going to be ripped away, while with the others he said simply “Well, that’s the law”. The things about this is that it works just fine, until the law backfires and starts to hit its creators, making them realize it wasn’t a very good one after all. But by the time that happens, it’s too late already.
I can’t speak for everyone in this matter, but for me, the last 10 minutes totally made the episode. It had everything a good fight should have: intense moments, team work, sacrifice, blood, unexpected turns and even some friend (or ex-friend) reunions. In the end, it all was as it should be: Marcos was finally reunited with Lorna and his unborn child, and the Strucker family was reunited too.
Overall, this really was a great episode. As I said before, it was the final few minutes which made it great, but of course, the rest was good too. This was, in my opinion, the best episode so far, so I am giving it an 8,5/10.
The fifth episode of the season is entitled “boXed in”, and in it we will see Jace angrier than we ever did before, because he will totally not settle with Reed and Lorna’s escape, so he wil not only want to get them, but also everyone who helped them.
